Labor in [[Panavic]] culture is divided into three distinct types: * Private work, serving another individual (e.g. maids, tutors, parents) * Public work, serving the community (e.g. farm workers, military, police) * Personal work, serving oneself (e.g. hobbies) All three types are socially encouraged, and are compensated if not materially then socially. Note that what we think of as "working for an employer" is actually public work, not private - it is framed as providing a service to the community on behalf of the employer. As a result, social power is not conceptualized as a vertical stack, but rather a range which one's public service covers. Servitude was a historical form of private or public work motivated mostly by social coercion (often related to [[mindforms]]) as opposed to compensation. Nowadays, it has merged with standard work.
